What Have I Been Up To?
February 2012.
I spent 10 wonderful days based at the foot of the Cairngorm Mountains. It was my intention to photograph “Scottish Wildlife in Snow”, well this did not happen because following two days of snow and through the night we had a temperature rise of 14 degrees, obviously this melted all the snow in the area, even on the very tops.
About John:
The majority of my working life I was fortunate enough to have had a successful life in the music and spoken word industries as a recording and mastering engineer, following by many years as the MD of a large prerecorded and CD/DVD manufacturing facility. The people I met and the awards gained where absolutely awesome and made it a pleasure to get up every morning and go to work!!!
How long have I been interested in photography? 22 years.
When did I become semi-pro? 2002.
When did I turn pro? 2006/07.
How did I get started?
Whilst working in London on a production, my wife came to visit and suddenly announced that “she had found me a hobby”!! In saying that, I hadn’t actually realised I was looking for a hobby!!!
Carol had in fact found me “The St Helens Camera Club", which I am still a member of, when time allows.
At the time of joining the club I photographed anything that was going and specialised in nothing. At least this was my photography until around 1999 when I then decided to concentrate on natural history and wildlife.
Additional information:
My photographic work covers many subjects and species of the natural world and from around the entire globe. I am always striding to find and capture a specie which has so far proved to be elude my collection. However Never do I capture an image at the cost or risk of a specie.
My greatest moment?
Throughout the years that followed my decision to specialise I continued to progress winning regional, national and international competitions.
During late 2003 I won first prize in an international wildlife competition. The first prize took me off on an, “all expenses paid” trip to the Falkland Islands via Chile. This was nothing short of being a trip of a life-time. I came home with approximately 3500 35mm transparencies.
The publicity which I gained at the time of winning this competition dramtically helped to launch my career as a “Professional Natural History & Wildlife Photographer”. I decided to sell my music industry company and as they say, the rest is history.
What equipment do I use?
All my camera photographic equipment is by “Canon”, studio lighting by “Elinchrom, outdoor clothing and hides by “Stealth-Gear”, and finally bacgs, backpacks and pouches etc by Lowepro.
Have I had any articles published?
Since my decision to turn pro I have had many articles and product reviews published in numerous photography, countryside and outdoor magazines not forgetting calendars, and some major specialist book publishers.
Who sells my work?
I am in a very fortunate position to have had my work accepted and represented by some of the world’s largest specialist stock agencies and calendar companies.
What else do I do?
Each year I organise and run a number of hands on photographic courses and workshops primarily targeted at the beginners, amateur and intermediate photographers. There are two points I guarantee with every course and/or workshop, this being you will certainly improve your techniques and secondly you will have fun.
Every month, (or as near as I can) I publish a free newsletter of what I have been doing, what has recently been happening and what I have planned for the future. For your free copy please register via the contact page at ww.fotographicimages.co.uk
Favorite Locations?
Anywhere which gives me the opportunity to absorb the subjects, species and spaces of the natural world. To mention but a few of my favorites:- The Cairngorms, North & West Yorkshire Moors, The Falklands Islands, Zambia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe.
Interests other than photography?
My family, local heritage, writing and walking,
Finally I would just like to say how very proud I am to be a member of SINWP.
